PERFORMANCE~~JUNE 6th 7pm ~$10 at door
Seattle First Thursday Art Walk ~~ at Toshiro Kaplan Lofts Theater
Space on 1st Fl of 115 Prefontaine Pl. S. Seattle, WA 98104
Titled: "Yuhma" Regeneration and rain for the human body as the Earth herself.BIO Nathan Montgomery is the founder and director of Syzygy Butoh based in Boulder, Colorado. While at Prescott College he studied multiple forms of contemporary dance, improvisation, theater and choreography with Delisa Myles, Liz Faller and Jay Ruby. In 1997 he met Diego Piñon who introduced him to Butoh and Ritual Dance. He then traveled to Japan to study and perform with some of Butoh's most influential teachers including Yoshito Ohno, Natsu Nakajima and Butoh company Sankai Juku. Since then Nathan has developed his own approach to Butoh and Ritual Dance that he teaches and performs throughout the United States and abroad. His work is deeply influenced by his practice of Native American ritual dance and both his teaching and performing are rooted in an intimacy with the Wild in Nature. He believes in dance as a way to touch our indigenous soul (even if only a memory or dream) as an expression of wholeness in response to the destitution of culture in modern times. His work has been showcased in Mexico, Hawaii, Japan and in many US cities. He has taught Butoh as adjunct faculty at Prescott College and Naropa University and as a guest artist at numerous university and residency programs. He is the co-founder and director of the Boulder International Butoh Festival. Recently Nathan founded the MESA (Movement and Ecology Sanctuary for Art) Project in Ouray, CO. The MESA Project is a yearly "dance camp" and film project hosted on his family land exploring themes of heritage, indigenousity, ecology and art.

I woke this morning with a feeling of elation! Wow! I can’t stop singing and making weird crazy noises, I crack myself up and start all over again
I didn’t know why I was so called to do this retreat and now I know… true bliss. I am deeply deeply touched by all at the retreat. Thank you to Christa for providing a safe environment to play in and what a treat to be doing the work on sacred land and in the most amazing space…. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh –Karen Burley-Chonzena
Amazed and blessed at the growth from this workshop. I have written over 10,000 words already…I am just gushing. The dam has been blown and the river is flowing freely. How do I express my gratitude? Christa, your loving guidance took me into places I couldn’t see. You knew where I was when I didn’t. A beautiful balance of directing presence when I got stuck or stale and respect of sovereignty allowing and inviting my unique exploration and expression. –Em Alla Sevol, Olympia, WA
Thank you for this glorious, deep, rich time – I will be digesting and integrating the experience for a long time. I had a sense when i first read about Christa’s work that I would feel aligned with her work, and I feel more than confirmed in this. I come out of the experience with the core realization of how primary and healing vocal work can be. To witness each person embody their own particular resonant being was such a gift. I just want to integrate every moment into my being! And we could not have met in a more sacred and blessed location. SOMA Studio held us so gracefully, it was our sacred circle. .–Deborah Koff-Chapin, Creator of Touch Drawing
“Christa creates such a loving and safe container in which to explore the hidden potential of your own voice, body, psyche and spirit. Her workshop was packed full of information and experiences that allowed me to cultivate parts of myself with which I had been longing to connect and meet other elements of myself I had never before accessed. It was powerful beyond my expectations. I feel blessed to have met Christa and am forever changed by her unique and powerful work.” –Christina Stinchcomb
“Christa Ray is an incredible facilitator, holding a potent container for transformation. With myself and the other participants, I experienced her meeting us where we were resourced, then take us to our edge and back. She is a master at encouraging growth while nurturing the soul. If you want to experience more of yourself, connect with your inner shaman, and have a deeper understanding of the polarities within you, Christa’s workshop is the perfect place to explore and integrate an expanded version of you through voice and movement. Healing, fun, grueling, and glorious, Embodied Voice is a temple for profound awakening.” ~KC, Boulder
“Throughout our weekend together, Christa showed great sensitivity to us each as individuals, and at the same time wove our personal materials into a coherent group process that left nobody behind. Although we each came to the workshop with different levels of voice-work experience (from the professional to the bathroom singer), Christa guided each of us in our own way to using our voices to liberate, reveal, and empower. Christa’s approach to voice work has brought me in touch with new facets of my self and my self-expression, and has opened my eyes to a profound way of working therapeutically with others. I highly recommend her as a teacher, mentor, and guide to the inner realms.”
— Anne Rust-D’Eye, third-year MA candidate, Naropa University, Somatic Psychology Department, Body Psychotherapy and Dance/Movement Therapy concentrations

Exploring the Sensual & Imaginal Body with Performance as Deep Personal & Community Metaphor
For this MASTER CLASS: Maureen emphasizes principles & practices from the Kazuo Ohno Dance Studio, including lessons from both Kazuo & Yoshito Ohno. Participants will have opportunity to experience the body as universal material & metaphor, discover personal mytho-poetry for movement in relationship with space, body & others. Each dancer will leave with a “tool kit” of intermodal art practices (movement, voice, drawing, writing) and an exemplary personal repertoire mined from his/her own body & soul that can be developed into performance material if desired. Exploring the Intuitional Body, Creating Relational Dance as Deep Personal Metaphor
What Am I Doing? Where Am I Going? What Is Happening Now?
What Happens Next? Who Am I Really?
1) Entails experiential guidance into exploration that begins with where each specific participant is coming from, energetically, & traveling throughout dance duets accessing, sourcing from this intrinsic material, noticing exactly what comes out of this, how we access, where we source from.
2) Specifically bringing awareness to future choices & accessing inspirational & motivational long term choice points, ie., how we as dancers influence our choices in the moment, what is our long range focus? how we use this to create a story or long term essence vision?
3) Focusing on how we treat ourselves in the present Contact Improvisation dance. How do we tend to focus, with guidance, on perceiving our experience in the dance as it surprisingly unravels? How does viewing perspective of the moment inform the outcome?
4) Looking into the immediate following step, how do we view dance (& life) as remaining fresh & completely new in our improvisation? Where does our immediate future come from? How do we choose this particular arrangement? What can we get rid of in focusing on choosing next step to stay completely real all the time?
5) Where are we coming from as ci dance participants & what this says about who we are, how we experience, how dance informs & defines our experience, hence our identity, or the slipperiness of changing self definition, self identity. What all this means when defining perspective on self empowerment.

”What happens if I let my heart open NOW?”..What happens if I stop doing and just pause?”….. Such a pause constitutes a form of prayer–a union with the Oneness of Being….Much as a surfer continuously falls through the wave that rises up beneath her, you ground in the still point, falling continuously through the present, as it moves through you…Rather than speak of a willingness to give yourself up to the wave of the present, we might speak of LOVE: a love for the stirrings of the present that awakens your whole Being; a LOVE for the dance of the present that transforms everything; a love for the stillness of the present which, like the depths of the sea, silently receives the message of each ripple on its face, and of every living being that moves within it; and a LOVE for the abandon that enables you to give yourself up to the wild peace of the world as it endlessly runs its course.” ~Philip Shepherd in book New Self New World pp 200-202
